The Labour opposition on Carmarthenshire County Council yesterday voted against a strategy by the Plaid-led authority to invest £150m over the next five years on a wide range of projects – including schools, childrens homes, highways and help for disabled people.
In presenting the capital programme as Cabinet Member for Resources, Cllr Alun Lenny said he was astonished by Labour’s negative stance. ‘When they indicated during the debate that they’d be voting against the strategy, I warned them that they’d be voting against everything in the £150m plan.
‘It includes £56m for highways and recycling infrastructure, £13m for a new care home in Cwmgwili, and a similar sum for Disabled Facility Grants to enable people to live for longer in their own homes. The long list also includes £2.5m towards the £15.5m Levelling Up money to revitalise Llanelli town centre, including a new market.
‘There’s a fund of £60m to continue supporting the Modernising Education Programme, which includes the proposed new 150-pupil Ysgol Heol Goffa in Llanelli. Detailed work is underway to finalise the design and cost, which will form the basis of a timeline – including planning, statutory consultation, and the Welsh Govt business case process.
‘Smaller sums include £1m for Burry Port Harbour and £1.1m to renovate the old town hall in Kidwelly.
‘It’s frankly unbelievable that the Labour group voted against all these capital projects which will help develop the local economy, create jobs, and enhance the quality of life for the people of Carmarthenshire, while safeguarding our resources for future generations. It’s no wonder that their party, both at a Welsh and UK level, is so unpopular.’
Despite Labour’s opposition, the capital programme was passed by a large majority.
