NSPCC welcomes Assembly committee recommendation on healthy relationship education
Commenting on a report by the Welsh Assembly’s Equalities Committee, which recommends healthy relationship lessons should be compulsory in schools across Wales, Head of NSPCC Cymru / Wales Des Mannion, said:
“Healthy relationship education is a vital part of equipping children with the skills they need to stay safe and speak out and we have long called for lessons to be made compulsory.
“The current situation in schools remains patchy and we welcome the committee’s call to address that issue and ensure a Wales-wide approach.
“Lessons need to be built around up-to-date content and should be regularly refreshed to make sure they’re relevant to the realities of children’s lives and experiences.
“NSPCC Cymru / Wales recently co-produced Agenda – an innovative online guide to positive relationships – designed by young people, for young people.
“A UK-first; we hope this toolkit will be adopted by schools and community groups across Wales to help change the way we discuss healthy relationships with children.”
