Cancer experts are set to pilot a new initiative aimed at improving cancer diagnosis waits in Wales.
A new pilot in the Cynon Valley will trial techniques employed in Denmark for patients suspected by GPs to have cancer – but who do not show obvious or urgent symptoms.
Welsh patients face some of the worst cancer survival rates in the developed world, and the pilot is today being welcomed by Welsh Conservatives.
Shadow Health Secretary, Angela Burns, said:
“For too long now cancer patients in Wales have faced some of the worst survival rates in the developed world, so this initiative is extremely welcome.
“We must never be afraid to adopt best practice from other countries.
“Early diagnosis gives cancer patients a much better chance of survival, and if this pilot can reduce the number of patients facing late intervention then it will also free up vital funds for the Welsh NHS.”
