Carmarthenshire Council need to come up with a robust plan for tackling asbestos which is being uncovered by coastal erosion.
That was the call from Llanelli’s MS Lee Waters and MP Nia Griffith as they examined the extent of erosion with local County Councillor John James.
An investigation by the Council and Natural Resources Wales is now underway, and they continue to reassure the public that the material poses little risk due to the wet conditions. However, they ask that members of the public do not touch or move the material so that it can be properly assessed and dealt with.
Executive Board Member Cllr Peter Hughes Griffiths said that “we will take any necessary action” to tackle the problem.
Visiting Burry Port beach, Lee Waters said: “The coastal erosion here is gradually uncovering parts of the former Carmarthen Bay Power Station. I welcome that the Council are now finally investigating the asbestos after local pressure. But what we need is a proper plan that gets ahead of this problem rather than constantly playing catch up. Because with rising sea levels, this is not just going to go away with a whimper.”
Nia Griffith said:” The scale of recent erosion is making this all the more urgent, and we need a proper clean-up plan as soon as possible. One immediate step would be to get some clearly visible signs put up straightaway, warning people of the treacherous nature of this waste.”
Cllr John James said: “I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Nia Griffith MP and Lee Waters MS for coming to Burry Port to witness for themselves the damage Coastal Erosion has caused to this part of the Carmarthenshire coastline, and for their support to get measures in place that negate the negative impact such occurrences would have against the public at large.”
