As a local political campaigner and former Llanelli Town Councillor, I am deeply concerned about the recent proposals in a report to the Carmarthenshire County Council Cabinet to overhaul our waste collection system in the county. These changes, if implemented, would see black bin bag collections reduced to every four weeks, among other significant adjustments. While the aim of increasing recycling rates and reducing landfill waste is commendable, the proposed methods will impose unnecessary hardships on Llanelli residents.
The Inconvenience of Four-Weekly Collections
Under the new plan, black bin bags would be collected every four weeks, down from the current three-week cycle. This extended period between collections is likely to create serious issues for households, particularly larger families, and those with young children. The potential for overflowing bins and hygiene problems is a genuine concern. And residents may find themselves struggling to manage their waste effectively, leading to increased stress and inconvenience.
Nantycaws Waste Depot: Increased Travel and Costs
The proposal to centralise waste collection at a new depot in Nantycaws presents additional challenges. Waste collection staff will face longer travel distances, resulting in higher travel expenses and longer commute times. Although the Council has promised to cover travel expenses for a year, this is a temporary fix for a permanent problem. The disruption to workers’ routines and the environmental impact of increased travel cannot be overlooked.
Financial Burden on the Council and Residents
The financial implications of this project are significant. The County Council will need to contribute £9.9 million, with the overall project costing nearly £2.5 million less per year to operate than the current system. However, this does not justify the initial outlay and the potential disruption to our community. These funds could be better spent on more effective, less intrusive measures to improve recycling rates without causing such widespread inconvenience.

Carmarthenshire Conservatives believe there are better ways to achieve our environmental goals without compromising the quality of life for Carmarthenshire residents.
Alternative solutions should be explored that prioritise both sustainability and convenience.
