2024 has been an incredible year for WWE & Professional Wrestling as a whole, and on Saturday, December 14th WWE will be hosting their final Major non weekly event with Saturday Night’s Main Event. A show which has not been in the schedule for a very long time and will be a blast from the past for older fans. Especially as it’s been confirmed that Jesse Ventura will be returning to act as a commentator for this event and 3 other edition’s of Saturday Night’s Main Event throughout the next year (first of which we know will be in January). Currently, at time of writing there is a 5 match card confirmed for the event though there is still an episode of Smackdown which could see a last minute addition & will finalise one of the 5 matches participants.
Firstly, on the show the first ever WWE Women’s United States Champion will be crowned as a conclusion of the still ongoing tournament to declare the inaugural champion. On December 13th’s Smackdown the Semi Final matches will take place with Bayley taking on Chelsea Green & Michin taking on Miss Money in the Bank Tiffany Stratton to book places in the final and hopefully write themselves into history forevermore.
The other Women’s match on the card will see Liv Morgan defending her WWE Women’s World Championship against Iyo Sky of Damage Control. Iyo of course was part of the Wargames team that defeated Liv & her team at Survivor Series. And both women will surely be looking over their shoulder if they win as Rhea Ripley has assured that she will be going after whichever woman that wins the match to reclaim the title that she never truly lost instead having to vacate due to injury.
A returning Drew McIntyre will be facing off against Sami Zayn. Drew had not been seen since his loss to CM Punk at Bad Blood but returned at the start of the month to assault both Sami Zayn & Jey Uso for their roles as part of Roman Reigns team in WarGames and annoyed with how quickly they both fell back in with Roman after everything they put him through over the years the OG Bloodline terrorised the Main Roster.
Gunther will be defending his World Heavyweight Championship against both Damien Priest & Finn Balor of The Judgement Day. Priest of course having just lost to Gunther at Survivor Series due to interference from Balor who is committed not only to terrorising Damien Priest whatever chance he gets, but also to finally reclaim a World Championship after he of course had to relinquish his Universal Championship less than a day after he became the inaugural champion. And Gunther will be looking to finally win a title defense/defeat Damien Priest entirely without interference of some kind to fill in any cracks and resolidify his position as the Ring General.
And the likely Main Event will see Cody Rhodes defending his Undisputed WWE Championship against Kevin Owens. Owens has been on the Warpath since attacking Cody following Bad Blood back in October. Both being frustrated from his failure to beat Cody at Bash in Berlin, and also similarly to Drew holding a grudge against Cody for his alliance with Roman Reigns in taking on Solo Sikoa’s Bloodline at Bad Blood. Kevin has also made it clear that he is aware and will at some point get around to Sami Zayn after him doing the same thing and Sami/Kevin have a long and famous history with each other as both best friends & worst enemies so it makes sense Kevin would not let that slide for Sami if he’s going after Cody Rhodes for it.
In closing, WWE will no doubt want to end the year strong with Saturday Night’s Main Event (which side note will air for free on Youtube in the UK) and then launch even higher into 2025 where of course the long-awaited move to Netflix will finally go through, and we finally enter the John Cena Retirement Tour (which is where I likely begin to cry realising the end is near for Big Match John).
