LABOUR-led Llanelli Town Council has reaffirmed and reinforced its respect for the Armed Forces, veterans, and their families, by signing a special pledge.
Members unanimously voted to strengthen the town’s support for service personnel and to ensure they are treated with fairness and respect in the community.
By signing up to the Armed Forces Covenant, the town council declared that it recognises the vital contribution made by regulars, reservists, veterans, and military families to the town and the nation.
Council leader David Darkin said: ‘As a council we are deeply proud of our armed forces community.
‘All councillors supported the adoption of the Covenant.’
He said the council had always supported the armed forces community.
‘This now is a public promise that Llanelli will always stand by those who have served and sacrificed for our country,’ he said.
‘We recognise the unique challenges faced by service personnel and their families, and we are committed to ensuring they face no disadvantage in our town.
‘The values of service, sacrifice and community embodied by our armed forces are the same values we strive to uphold in Llanelli.
‘We invite feedback from the armed forces community on how we can continue to improve and honour this commitment.’
The Covenant includes practical measures such as supporting Armed Forces Day and Remembrance Sunday,, and other events.
The council works closely with Armed Forces and veterans groups supporting the Llanelli branch of the Royal British Legion, Llanelli Veterans Association, the unique to Llanelli mental health charity Links, the Breakfast Club, and other activities and organisations.
Town councillor Shaun Greaney said: ‘As a Labour-led council we are delighted to stand with our armed forces community, veterans and families.
”Signing the Covenant is an unbreakable commitment to those who have been prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
‘To demonstrate the values the Covenant embodies town council community centres and green space areas will be made available at the lowest rate of hiring charge to Armed Forces groups.
‘Our ongoing commitment will ensure town council services, activities and events are advertised to the Armed Forces community.
‘We will also be welcoming feedback on how we are doing in meeting these aims going forward and presenting an annual public report on our progress.’
