Carl Peters‑Bond, independent candidate for the new Caerfyrddin constituency, has criticised proposals to build a new roundabout at Nantycaws on the A48 — one of Carmarthenshire’s busiest and most strategic routes — warning that the plan risks years of disruption while failing to address the long‑term safety and congestion issues on this vital trunk road.
The proposals, reported by WalesOnline, could lead to prolonged construction works on a route relied upon daily by commuters, businesses, emergency services and hauliers.
Carl Peters‑Bond said:
“The solution to the dangerous A48 does not lie in years of construction, disruption and delays — only to leave us with even more congestion at a brand‑new roundabout at Nantycaws, right in the middle of a vital trunk route. That is not a serious long‑term plan for a road of national importance.”
He noted that the existing roundabouts between the end of the M4 and the A40 at Carmarthen are already among the busiest — and most daunting — junctions in west Wales.
“Anyone who drives this stretch knows how heavily loaded these roundabouts already are. Adding another one at Nantycaws will not solve the problem — it will simply move it, and make the whole route slower and more dangerous.”
Carl emphasised that the A48’s problems reflect a wider failure to invest strategically in transport infrastructure, a central theme of his manifesto.
“My manifesto sets out a clear principle: Wales needs modern, safe, future‑proof transport links that support our economy and protect our communities. The A48 is a textbook example of where ambition has been replaced by short‑term fixes.”
He argues that the Welsh Government and Carmarthenshire Council must adopt a more comprehensive, long‑term approach.
“If the Welsh Government and Carmarthenshire Council were serious about resolving the problems and investing in our highway infrastructure, they would close the side‑access routes onto the A48, upgrade the existing junctions to full grade‑separated status, and begin work on extending the M4 to Carmarthen.
These are the strategic solutions that match the scale of the problem — not temporary sticking‑plasters.”
Carl says the A48 debate highlights exactly why Wales must move away from piecemeal interventions and towards infrastructure planning that supports economic growth, safety and connectivity.
“People deserve a transport system that works — not one that lurches from crisis to crisis. The A48 needs a proper, modern solution that reflects its importance to Carmarthenshire and west Wales.”
