GREEN-FINGERED tenants at Nant-Y-Glo in Pontyberem have been discovering the benefits of home composting.
Grass cuttings along with kitchen scraps such as vegetable peelings and teabags are now being composted instead of just being thrown away.
And the rich soil conditioner it makes is being used in their flower pots to brighten up the council-run sheltered housing complex.
Executive Board Member for Housing Cllr Linda Evans said: “Nant-Y-Glo is a very green complex, as well as composting they use a water butt, they grow their own veg and plant flowers to encourage bees. They also recycle glass, batteries and old mobile phones. They are an example to us all.”
The two compost bins were given to the complex by the council’s recycling section which is promoting home composting to residents across Carmarthenshire.
Executive Board Member for the Environment Cllr Hazel Evans said: “About a third of our household waste can be composted including prunings, vegetable peelings, egg shells, tea bags and shredded paper.
“We are trying to raise awareness on the benefits of home composting so are happy to support the complex.”
