Due to the unfortunate demise of Fairtrade Llanelli, there were no events running locally here, for the first time in 5 years. It will be interesting to see what other Fairtrade groups have got up to during Fairtrade Fortnight.
Thousands of campaigners across the country came together with speakers from around the world to campaign for fairer pay for farmers and combat climate change.
Ideas for campaigns
Walk around your local area to raise visual awareness of Fairtrade within your community.
The Arts University of Bournemouth put on:
- A Willy Wonka inspired Chocolate Farm display to help educate people about cocoa supply chains.
- A Wish Tree – people came along to add to the wish tree to demonstrate how they want the world to look in the future. Wishes included – eradicate global poverty, combat climate change.
- Informative tents about production chains for bananas, coffee and cotton.
Businesses
- Lidl’s uniforms are now made from Fairtrade cotton.
- All co-ops support Fairtrade
- Co-op’s South African wine range will now be completely Fairtrade
- Fairtrade trail showing off the businesses where we can buy and try Fairtrade
- Local churches can get involved , inviting local people in for a Fairtrade coffee or tea and a Fairtrade chocolate.
- Design and create your own local Fairtrade flags and fly them all over your community
- Dress up in representations of Fairtrade like bananas , cocoa pods etc. and dance around your community
- Choose the world you want Festival
- Fast Fashion and its impact on 350 million people working in the cotton sector
- Fairtrade hampers as prizes
- Fairtrade Quizzes
- Hold an event in your local library, e.g. exhibitions
- Involve your MP
- Look on the Fairtrade schools website to get some ideas and involve young people.
- Get children to design the Fairtrade logo from waste materials

- Coffee mornings
- Fairtrade cocktail masterclass
This is not a usual article about Fairtrade but it is a way of showing how the many Fairtrade groups celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight. It usually is a fun and educational time where people can learn more about Fairtrade and how important it is. We have Fairtrade Wales because the Welsh government sees Fairtrade as an important part of government.
The Well-being of Future Generations Act has 7 well-being goals, one of which is a globally responsible Wales. Fairtrade is an important part of that.
“A few public bodies have highlighted their procurement activities as demonstrating their contribution to being more globally responsible through ethically sourced supply chains, Fair Trade policies and seeking to procure locally. Public Health Wales promoted Fairtrade Fortnight and in 2019 worked with procurement to communicate the Fair Trade products available for purchase corporately, alongside a Fair trade well being goal”.
Fairtrade continues to be important to the Welsh Government and hopefully it will be important to Llanelli one day.
