A party of young choristers from Carmarthenshire have come second out of nine countries in Eurovision Choir of the Year 2017.
Côr Merched Sir Gâr, 42 secondary school pupils from the county representing Wales and the UK, flew out to Riga, Latvia to take part in the international competition after winning Cor Cymru in April.
The choir, which is run by Carmarthenshire Music Service, came second to Slovenia, with Latvia in third place in the competition on Saturday night. They returned home yesterday.
Carmarthenshire County Council director of education Gareth Morgans, who travelled out to Riga for the competition, said: “Côr Merched Sir Gâr have done the county and Wales proud. It is a fantastic result. The pupils and staff have worked hard to achieve this.”
Executive board member for education and children’s services Cllr Glynog Davies said: “Congratulations to Côr Merched Sir Gâr for a great result, they were really inspiring.
“They really shone in a competition that was so varied with a wide range of cultures and languages, and it was good to see the Welsh language so appreciated.
“This is proving to be a fantastic year for our county with this latest success coming on top of a number of our county ensembles representing Wales at festivals and competitions across the UK.”
