Pembrey Country Park’s annual Walrus Dip will not be held this year due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
The decision is in line with Welsh Government guidance and increasing concerns about the spread of coronavirus linked to large gatherings.
It is only the third time for the Boxing Day dip to be cancelled in its 34-year history – one due to an oil spill and the second when the sea froze over.
The event, supported by the RNLI, Coastguard and St John’s Ambulance, attracts thousands of people from across Wales who brave the weather for charity to take a dip in the freezing cold waters of Cefn Sidan Beach.
Cllr Peter Hughes Griffiths, Carmarthenshire County Council’s Executive Board Member for Culture, Sport and Tourism, said: “We are extremely disappointed that we have had to cancel the Walrus Dip. It is a hugely popular event and I understand there will be many people who will also be disappointed, however, given the current situation with the Covid-19 pandemic it has left us no choice. I hope that people will find other ways to give generously and support good causes in our communities.”
