Llanelli’s Ffwrnes Theatre will soon host a screening of a new bilingual film tackling themes around mental health and relationships. Translations (15), from award-winning director, Keith Kopp and starring an up-and-coming Welsh cast, Kate Morgan-Jones (The Pact) and Alan Emrys (Young Wallander, Host), focuses on love between two people facing challenges with their mental health.
When an agoraphobic translator reunites with her deceased brother’s best friend, secrets and passions are revealed. Translations is director, Keith Kopp’s first feature film. Keith is an award-winning film director from Portland, Oregon, whose work has been screened in festivals around the world. He said, “I made Translations because I am excited by the theme of captivity and its cinematic potential within a relationship… Stef and Evan have a shared loss and they deal with it in different ways which creates an interesting antagonism in the story. I was also inspired to tell this story because of my own journey with mental health. As a veteran I underwent extensive therapy to come to terms with my own PTSD and this experience allowed me to understand Stef in a personal way.”
Kate Morgan-Jones trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and has worked on projects with Theatr Iolo and RCT Theatres. Kate has recently appeared in The Forfeit and popular Welsh TV series, The Pact. Alan Emrys is a Welsh actor known for his performances in Young Wallander, Sister Boniface Mysteries, and Host. He was raised in Holyhead and attended the Drama Centre London.
Translations won the Audience Choice Award for Best Feature Film, as well as Best Actress and Best Screenplay awards at the Riverside Film Festival 2023. The film was shot in Welsh and English and was partly filmed in and around the Chartist Caves in Brecon. Director, Keith Kopp said, “I fell in love with Wales for the picturesque landscapes, culture, and its unique tie to the arts some years back when I moved to the UK. It just made sense for the film to be set there.”
