ACTION to tackle a notorious Llanelli town centre road danger hotspot which has been the scene of a number of fatalities has been given the green light by local councillors.
Deputy Leader of Labour-led Llanelli Town Council, Andre McPherson, said traffic calming and other safety measures would help save lives at Station Road and New Dock Road.
‘Sadly this action has come too late to prevent a string of road accident casualties over recent years, some of which have been fatal,’ he said.
‘Ward councillors Suzy Curry, John Prosser and myself have called for action for years so to hear that improvements are coming soon is very welcome,’ added councillor McPherson.
‘We hope and pray the safety programme will save lives in the future and people will have to be more sensible.’
Town council Labour group press officer, councillor Shaun Greaney, said: ‘The two roads go through the heart of well-established, heavily-populated communities between the centre of town and the coast.
‘So Station Road and New Dock Road are very busy and a lot of children and young people live in the area.
‘Labour town and county councillors strongly back these improvements which will enhance the lives of people in the area by making the main through road safer for all.’
‘This is especially welcome as traffic is likely to increase with the opening of the Pentre Awel development and leisure centre.’
Carmarthenshire County Council road safety engineer Martin Owen said it was hoped the traffic calming measures would improve pedestrian safety and reduce vehicle speeds in areas of high risk ‘particularly near the desire lines and crossing movements used by vulnerable road users.’
In a statement to the town council, he added: ‘The proposed interventions include the installation of raised tables at strategic locations along the roads and side crossing points.
‘By reducing vehicle speeds, these measures will enhance driver awareness and reaction times, while also encouraging active travel by creating a safer environment for walking and cycling.’
The improvements are planned as part of a Welsh Labour Government Road Safety Grant Scheme being implemented during the current financial year,
