Ysgol Gyfun y Strade recently received a positive Estyn inspection report, highlighting the school as a warm, supportive and inclusive community where pupils feel a strong sense of belonging.
The report recognises the strength of relationships across the school, noting that “positive working relationships between staff and pupils are a basis for a productive learning environment.” Most pupils behave respectfully, demonstrate highly positive attitudes to learning and apply themselves enthusiastically, contributing to a calm and purposeful atmosphere.
Inspectors also highlighted that most pupils feel safe and value the school’s “inclusive and familial ethos”, which plays a key role in their wellbeing and engagement. Many pupils make sound progress from their starting points, including those with additional learning needs, supported by effective teaching and strong pastoral care.
The report praises the school’s curriculum as broad, relevant and inclusive, supporting pupils to develop as well rounded individuals. A particular strength is the strategic approach to developing literacy, numeracy and digital skills, with inspectors noting that planning and co ordination are “extremely effective” and result in many pupils applying their skills confidently across the curriculum.
Wellbeing and support arrangements were also recognised as strong. Staff know pupils well and provide tailored support to meet their needs. The ‘Strade yn y Gymuned’ initiative was highlighted as a valuable feature of the school’s work, helping to improve pupils’ wellbeing and engagement while supporting them to overcome challenges linked to poverty and social and emotional difficulties.
The report also highlights strong opportunities for pupil leadership, including the school radio station ‘Sain y Sosban’, which promotes Welsh language and culture while strengthening the sense of community across the school.
Estyn recognised the clear vision and robust leadership of the headteacher, supported effectively by senior leaders and governors. The report notes that leaders have secured improvements in key areas, including teaching and skills provision, although it identifies improving attendance as a priority for further development.
Ysgol Gyfun y Strade’s Head Teacher, Geoff Evans, said:
We are extremely proud of our pupils and all they have achieved. Their positive attitudes, resilience and commitment to learning are at the heart of this success, and this report rightly recognises the strong sense of community and belonging that makes Ysgol Gyfun y Strade such a special place.”
Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr Glynog Davies, said:
This positive Estyn report reflects the dedication and hard work of staff, leaders and governors at Ysgol Gyfun y Strade, as well as the enthusiasm and commitment of its pupils. The report highlights a caring and ambitious learning environment where pupils are supported to succeed. The strong focus on wellbeing, skills development and community engagement is particularly encouraging, and we look forward to supporting the school as it continues to build on these successes.”
