Fantastic response to Christmas Foodbank donation appeal…
Plaid Cymru Llanelli have been using their office on Bres Road as a drop-off point for donations to be made to the Myrtle House foodbank here in Llanelli.
Over 90% of the food distributed by foodbanks in The Trussell Trust network is donated by the public – that’s why your food donations are absolutely vital to their ability to give everyone referred to them a balanced and nutritious three day supply of food.
Sean Rees, Plaid’s Campaigns Manager in Llanelli:
“We have had a fantastic response for the Trussell Trust foodbank donation appeal. Thank you to everyone for their support. This Christmas, thousands of families will once again struggle to put food on the table and some will have to rely on a foodbank for support.
“Our office on Bres Road has been used as a drop-off point to help The Trussell Trust and Myrtle House locally so that the most vulnerable are able to benefit for the generosity that exists within our community.
“1 in 5 of the UK population currently lives below the poverty line. While it’s terrible that foodbanks should exist, we are indebted to the volunteers who operate them for their dedication and for the caring role they provide. In 2015/16, the Trussell Trust provided 1,109,309 three-day emergency food supplies. Over 400,000 went to children.
“This is not the kind of society Plaid Cymru wants people to live in. Austerity isn’t working, it has increased inequality and penalised those with the least. This combined with the ongoing stagnation in wages means more and more people in Wales are becoming dependent on donations.
“We must do all we can to tackle poverty, deliver prosperity and support those on low incomes. Some of the steps that could be taken include investing in infrastructure, tackling tax avoidance as well as raising living standards.
