Foothold Cymru’s Full Circle / Cwblhau’r Cylch project is proud to share that ‘Litter out of Llanelli,’ a local campaign to fight litter, is lending its support to the forthcoming Llanelli Half Marathon organized by Front Runner Events.
Llanelli Half marathon takes place this Sunday 25th February 2024, bringing a real buzz to our town and beautiful coast path. Marathons often produce a lot of waste, but the organisers have been making great strides in their sustainability with initiatives such as replacing their old medals with sustainable wooden ones, and the removal of giveaway merchandise like race t-shirts.
Foothold Cymru and Full Circle are pleased to work with Front Runner Events to further support them in reducing the environmental impact of this much-loved event. In previous years, marathon organisers have committed to leaving the route as clean as they found it, but this year with the support of ‘Litter out of Llanelli’, Front Runner Events have committed to leaving the route in a cleaner, better condition than it was found.
Volunteers from ‘Litter Out of Llanelli’, a new community movement of dedicated members facilitated by Foothold Cymru and supported by Dyfed Recycling, Llanelli Town Council, Llanelli Rural Council, Carmarthenshire County Council and the Rotary Club, will unite to tackle litter along the marathon route, encompassing the picturesque Millennium Coastal Path.
Plastic waste collected during the marathon will be donated to Llanelli Precious Plastics, a community-led project in the town that repurposes waste plastic into useful items.
Grainne Connolly, Full Circle Project Manager, encourages collaboration. Stating “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Front Runner Events and support them in their mission to be more sustainable. Litter along the coast path finds its way to the sea and harms our wildlife, but our amazing litter picking volunteers are proud to do everything they can to keep our local environment clean, and have been making a big impact around Llanelli with regular community clean-ups.”
Full Circle / Cwblhau’r Cylch, a project funded by Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, is committed to transforming Llanelli into Wales’s first Zero Waste Town over the next three years. ‘Litter out of Llanelli’ is an important part of this goal, as the campaign strives to promote environmental sustainability and community well-being in and around Llanelli.
