CETMA has secured funding from Carmarthenshire County Council’s Food Poverty Fund to create a community growing space in Tyisha, Llanelli.
The Home Gardening Project will provide volunteers with a space where they can learn about improving their all-round general wellbeing by growing healthy and nutritious food.
Laura Williams, Project Officer said:
“The aim of the project is to encourage people to start growing their own food. and to provide the Community with fresh food. We’ll also show them how to preserve the food to make it last longer.”
We understand that Foodbanks are only temporary measures when it comes to combating Food Poverty.”
“That’s why we’re looking at other solutions such as growing your own and we have a plot for them to learn about growing food and we’ll run sessions where members of the community and local organisations can attend.”
Llanelli’s Tyisha ward is to be transformed as part of an exciting multi-million-pound regeneration project. It has been identified that this area is one of the most deprived in Carmarthenshire, with both socio-economic and environmental challenges.
“We are going to utilise the land around CETMA Business Centre, which is based in Marsh St to create this community space.”
“We’re also working with Ail Gyfle-Second Chance who have kindly made raised beds and a community larder where people can collect food (or place their own unwanted food) if they choose.” Added Laura.
