The accreditation by Disabled Motoring UK recognises that parking facilities are high quality and accessible to disabled motorists.
The 600 space car park opened in October 2015 as part of the first phase of Neath’s town centre regeneration.
To achieve the standard, car parks are assessed on their suitability for disabled drivers based on a number of things, including the size of the parking bays, ease of access around the car park, good lighting and clear signage. Also on the list of criteria is monitoring of accessible parking bays and enforcement to ensure that they are not being used by people who do not have a disability.
Councillor Annette Wingrave, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Sustainable Development said: “It’s very important that disabled drivers have confidence when using car parks and that they are as safe and accessible as possible.
“We’re very pleased the multi-storey car park in Neath has achieved this accreditation which confirms the parking provision on offer there is to standards disabled drivers would expect.”
The car park provides direct access to the town’s shopmobility service which hires out wheelchairs and electric scooters to help people who have limited mobility to shop and enjoy the facilities in Neath.
Cliff Adney, Shopmobility Manager said: “The Shopmobility Service depends on having disabled parking close at hand and the new car park fits the bill.
“There are dedicated parking spaces for our customers and if these are taken, there are adequate disabled bays on other floors”
