A brand-new Tesco Express store has opened in Tumble this morning (Friday 9 October), with colleagues busy welcoming the local community through its doors.

The team were delighted to be joined by a very special VIP guest to cut the ribbon– former Welsh rugby international and local hero Ken Owens.

Featuring a range of food-to-go options, fresh produce and cupboard essentials, Tesco Tumble Express, in Heol Y Neuadd in Tumble, is a conveniently located stop for local residents and workers to pick up a lunchtime meal deal or replenish the fridge mid-week.

The new store will also include a range of locally sourced Welsh products, helping to champion local favourites and products tailored to the surrounding community.

Affectionately known as ‘The Sheriff’, Ken captained his country in the 2023 Six Nations, and appeared on the British and Lions tour.

Since retiring from rugby, Ken has co-founded the artisan snack brand Sheriff’s Biltong with West Wales food producer Ruth Davies. The biltong is made exclusively with PGI Welsh beef in a dedicated West Wales facility, supporting local farming, and is now stocked in a number of Tesco stores – including Tumble Express.

The opening of the Tumble Express has created fourteen new roles in the local area.

Tesco Express store manager, Martin Lewis, said: “I’ve been with Tesco for three decades and am a Llanelli lad myself, so being able to open this store means the world to me. Alongside my team, I am proud to welcome customers into the store and look forward to serving our neighbours from day one. We’re excited to become part of the Tumble community.

Martin continued: “We’re delighted to bring a modern and convenient Tesco Express to the area, offering customers a wide range of fresh produce, meal solutions, bakery items, and everyday essentials.

“We’re pleased to have created 14 new jobs, with the majority of our colleagues hired locally, helping us build strong community connections.”

The new Express store will take part in the Tesco Fruit and Veg Grants scheme to provide support to local schools and community initiatives.

Every four months, customers in-store can vote for one of three local projects, with first place awarded up to £1,500, second place up to £1,000, and third place up to £500.

To further support the local community, the store will also be part of the Tesco Community Food Connection scheme, redistributing surplus food to local charities and community groups.
