Improvement works on the A484 Sandy Road are now complete, with the newly signalised junction with Maes-y-Coed having reopened on Friday, 29 August 2025. This scheme has been funded by Welsh Government Local Transport Fund.
The new traffic signals use an intelligent system which responds to real-time traffic conditions to help improve flow. These improvements are designed to bring long-term benefits to journey times, safety, and reliability.
There will be a settling-in period while it adapts to local traffic patterns.
During this time, road users may notice that traffic doesn’t flow as smoothly as expected straight away. This is entirely normal and part of how the system learns and adjusts. The signals are expected to improve in performance over the following weeks and should be running at full efficiency by the end of September.
We’re also aware that drivers will need time to adjust to the new junction layout, and that traffic patterns will continue to return to normal following the summer period. While some short-term delays are possible, we will monitor the junction closely and consider further adjustments where needed to help traffic move as effectively as possible.
Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet member for Transport, Watse and Infrastructure services, Cllr Edward Thomas said:
I’d like to thank the local community for their patience while we’ve carried out these essential works on Sandy Road. We know how important this route is, and the new signal system has been designed to help ease congestion and improve traffic flow over the long term.
As with any new infrastructure, there will be a short adjustment period as the system learns and adapts to traffic patterns, and as drivers get used to the new layout.
My thanks also go to our delivery teams and partners for working hard to deliver this complex scheme within a tight timeframe.”
The remaining works in the residents’ car parking area to the rear of Sandy Road are now also complete and this has reopened.

I have driven through at many different times of day, including peak times with the new layout and I have to say I found it quite smooth to go through the lights there. I waited longer to get past the college traffic queue.
Time will tell, but so far so good
The college queue is at the end of the delay caused by the Sandy Road lights Afrer all the works and costs inurred rheyve only created space for two car lengths in the new turning right lane from Sandy Road into Maesycoed.

Frederick Hughes nope it was from cars letting the buses to pull out the college when going towards Llanelli, and the queue of cars waiting to turn into college heading towards pwll
For someone local like myself , in my experience, nothing has changed. The queues are still all the way back to cattle and co.
How much did this work cost the tax payers of Carmarthenshire? 💰
10 + workmen working for about 2 months. What have they done? Painted a few lines and arrows which local primary school kids could have done. Total waste of money. Would have been easier & cheaper to just remove the green arrow to stop vehicle turning right. 🤯
