REFORM and Conservative politicians in Wales have been blasted for ‘misleading the public’ and ‘showing hypocrisy’ by a leading Labour Llanelli town councillor.

Criticism of the Welsh Labour Government’s Nation of Sanctuary policy by Reform’s Carmarthenshire chair Gareth Beer, and the former leader of the Welsh Conservatives in the Senedd, Andrew RT Davies, was ‘morally indefensible’, said councillor Shaun Greaney.

Mr Davies asked Social Justice Minister Jane Hutt in a Senedd plenary meeting in January 2024 what support the Welsh Government was giving to ‘people impacted by the full-scale invasion of Ukraine’.

Ms Hutt said that as a Nation of Sanctuary, the Welsh Government was supporting ‘our Ukrainian guests, helping them move on into longer-term accommodation and integrate into our communities.

‘Our Team Wales approach has led to over 7,000 Ukrainians finding sanctuary in Wales.’

However, earlier this month Mr Davies said: ‘I make no apologies for saying this £55 million project must be scrapped.’

In a recent TV interview on BBC Wales, Reform’s Carmarthenshire chairman Gareth Beer, who stood against Labour’s Dame Nia Griffith in Llanelli in the 2024 General, polling 1,504 votes short of a shock win, also called for the scrapping of the Nation of Sanctuary policy.

Councillor Greaney said: ‘The official record shows there was no criticism of the policy from Mr Davies or any other members of the Conservative group at the Senedd when Ms Hutt welcomed the Ukrainians and outlined the measures helping them settle here.

‘It is hypocritical of them now to turn around and take the appalling view they have,

‘Mr Beer would seem to be in denial that Wales is helping our allies in desperate need. He doesn’t seem to want the public to know we’re helping Ukrainians.

‘In my opinion, Mr Davies and Mr Beer are not presenting the facts to the public. More than £45 million of the Nation of Sanctuary cost supported Ukrainian refugees.

‘Now the policy is opposed by politicians whose views are stirring things up.

‘The Conservatives are moving to the far-right. What would they and Reform do?

‘Turn away Ukrainians fleeing the horrors of the war inflicted upon them by Putin?

‘Because ending the Nation of Sanctuary policy would mean just that.

‘The Conservatives and Reform have an immoral and, in my view, unpopular stance.

‘Ukraine is an ally of our country against Putin. Its people are the victims. To abandon them in their hour of need would be disgraceful and inhumane.’

First Minister Eluned Morgan has said she is ‘proud’ Wales has ‘given full support to Ukraine, from the moment Ukraine was illegally and brutally invaded by Vladimir Putin.’

Baroness Morgan added that Wales had offered the ‘hand of friendship’ to those who had lost their homes as a result of Russian aggression.

At the time, Conservative Darren Millar, welcomed her statement, posting to X: ‘Like you, these Welsh Conservatives stand full square behind Ukraine in the face of the illegal invasion by Russia of its sovereign territory, and that will not waver.’

Last week, Mr Millar asked the First Minister to ‘scrap the wasteful policy and put the people of Wales first’.

Councillor Greaney said: ‘The Conservatives seem to have changed their stance to chase Reform votes. Where are their principles?’

  1. It breaks my heart to see this vile betrayal of the wonderful families that were welcomed into our community.
As a Kidwellian, Beer should be utterly ashamed of himself. We’d much rather have our Ukrainian families than him and his notsee wife.

    • Lynn Jones Wales is Skint hun. Maybe unchecked handouts to people who shouldn’t be here is not a bad thing. There shouldn’t be any Ukrainian Men in Wales so if there are they need to go! I accept that Women and Children should be helped, but the Men have to fight. What kind of Man doesn’t fight for his country? But we all know that the real Sanctuary is for Men of a certain ideology fleeing France…

      • Mark Anthony Rees They are all women and children so that’s complete 🐂💩. Why don’t you go over there and fight if that’s what a man should do? All this “We’re full. We’re skint”… it’s a pack of lies.

      • Lynn Jones I’m not Ukrainian hun, and btw it’s always liberal Women happy to send other Women’s boys and Men off to War. Female privilege, I’ve served my Country thanks, I don’t serve others…

  2. Well if they feel their idea is so welcome, let’s put Nation of Sanctuary to a vote.
It’s not a proposal which would appear on their party leaflets, that’s for sure. The evidence is clear, it’s crazy
