Rugby tends to unite two of Wales’ greatest treasures, real ale and rugby. Whether you’ve worked up a thirst by playing or just watching the game, there’s really no finer way to find refreshment.
There’s long been an association with rugby and beer. Wales’ largest Brewery Brains was official shirt sponsor during Wales’ first Grand Slam for 27 years and nicely sidestepped a French ban on advertising alcohol for the clash in Paris by swapping the Brains logo on the front of the shirt for that equally prized rugby attribute: “Brawn”.
You’ll find no brewery more passionate about Welsh Rugby than Tenby Harbwr, who have a whole pack of rugby inspired beers, you’ll love this selection of must-try beers –
TENBY HARBWR – SEABASS FRENCH PALE ALE 3.9%
Originally brewed for the Six Nations Rugby in honour of the popular nickname of retired French player Sebastien Cabal. As the style suggests, the beer is all about the French hops! Aramis provides a subtle floral almost grassy flavor whilst Barbe Rouge gives a delicious red fruit aroma of strawberry and cherry. Blended with Maris Otter malt, this ale is light in colouring with a malty-sweet base. Delicieuse!
TENBY HARBWR – NORTH STAR AMBER ALE 4.2%
British malts including Amber malt create a smooth, slightly toasted ale that when combined with British hops gives a well-balanced bitterness and subtle aromas.
North Star is one of their core ales which was given a rebrand to mark the 2017 6 Nations Rugby Tournament, and is their tribute to Lions and Wales legend: George North.
TENBY HARBWR – FOX – RUBY RED RUGBY BEER 4.6%
Added to the range last year, this was made in tribute to Jonathan Davies, commonly known as ‘Fox’. Brewed blending traditional Maris Otter with Crystal malt, which creates a delicious blend of malty sweetness along with caramel and honey. German Cara Red then gives this ale its deep ruby red colour with a small amount of Black malt for those roasted flavours you associate with darker ales. No less than four different hop varieties are used in this beer, all contributing to a well-balanced bitterness with a slight spicy note and a very pleasant herbal blackcurrant.
Beers well worth a Try!
