Final arrangements are being confirmed for between 10 and 12 Syrian refugees to be resettled in Aberystwyth before Christmas. The refugees have been prioritised by staff from the United Nations, working closely with the Home Office in order to determine their suitability to be resettled in Ceredigion.
Members of the Task and Finish Group have been working with Home Office officials to enable as smooth a transition as possible for this small group of people who will arrive in the county fleeing the effects of the ongoing crisis in Syria.
Chairman of the Group, Ellen ap Gwynn, stated: “These people are ordinary people from ordinary backgrounds, who have witnessed events that no-one should have to experience. Members of the Task and Finish Group are committed to work together for the benefit of these people, and we continue to be encouraged by the enthusiastic humanitarian response shown by people across Ceredigion.”
The refugees will be housed in properties that private landlords have made available. The tenancies are then managed on their behalf by the Care Society, a stand-alone voluntary organisation.
