Kindhearted Swansea residents have donated mountains of much-needed supplies for local charities working with the city’s homeless and refugees.
Toiletries, gloves, socks, hats and warm jackets are among the items people have dropped-off at community centres across the city for distribution to the needy this month.
Swansea Council’s community buildings team worked closely alongside the authority’s housing and poverty and prevention departments to organise the collections, which have now finished.
Community centres to have acted as bases for the donations included Brynmelyn, Brynmill, Dyfatty, Gorseinon Institute, Penclawdd, St Phillips, West Cross, Trallwn, Llansamlet, Morriston, Morriston Memorial Hall, Treboeth and Parc Llewellyn.
Cllr Mark Child, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Wellbeing and Healthy City, said: “This collection has now finished but everyone who donated supplies deserves huge praise because their contributions will benefit many less fortunate people in the city.
“Community Centres make ideal bases for drop-off points because they’re located on people’s doorsteps right across Swansea, which means those who took the time to donate didn’t have to travel far.
“The hard work of our staff alongside local charities shows what can be achieved to help the needy when we work in close partnership.”
There are community centres in almost every area of Swansea. All the buildings are owned by the council and managed by local people elected to serve on volunteer management committees.
The buildings range from smaller single hall premises and middle sized multi-purpose hall centres to larger buildings, with more than one hall including sports halls. The buildings can be hired for a large variety of uses including meeting facilities, sport, arts and crafts, educational classes, drama, youth clubs, parent and toddler groups and birthday parties.
