Tata Steel celebrates the retirement of Joe Gallacher, Works Manager at its site in Trostre, Carmarthenshire.
Tata Steel bids farewell to Joe Gallacher, Works Manager at Trostre, as he prepares to retire at the end of March after an incredible 48-year career in the steel industry.
“Joe’s leadership, resilience, and unwavering commitment have left an indelible mark on the company, the industry, and the wider community,” Richard Sidebottom, Director Downstream Operations – Tata Steel UK.
Joe’s journey in steel began in Scotland as a metallurgical trainee at Tata Steel’s Clydebridge, followed by roles in research and development, iron-making, and blast furnace production.
His career saw him take on pivotal positions at Ravenscraig and Port Talbot before becoming Works Manager at Trostre in 2012. Over the past 13 years, Joe has navigated major industry shifts, ensuring Trostre remains a cornerstone of Tata Steel’s operations.
Trostre is a specialist steel facility, producing high-quality packaging steels, used in food and beverage cans, aerosols, and other consumer packaging. The site plays a crucial role in providing sustainable, recyclable steel solutions to the packaging industry.
Throughout his career, Joe has faced and overcome significant challenges, including Brexit and COVID-19. He has also overseen the first stages in the transition to Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology.
Under his leadership, Trostre has successfully navigated shifting market conditions, fostered a strong workforce culture, upheld its status as the UK’s only fully loaded plant, and solidified its role as a key player in the national steel industry.
James Davies, who already has 15 years’ experience at Tata Steel most recently as Group Senior Manager – Steel & Slab Manufacturing, has joined the Trostre team and will become new Works Manager from April.
“Beyond the technical and operational achievements, I am particularly proud of the team culture at Trostre. Collectively, we have created a positive and collaborative environment,” comments Joe. “I also know the staff will welcome James with open arms!”
As Joe embarks on his well-earned retirement, he plans to take on new challenges, including completing the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, climbing with his children, and pursuing his passion for painting through part-time art courses. Additionally, he aims to contribute to mental health support work with ex-military organisations, ensuring his next chapter remains as purposeful and fulfilling as his career at Tata Steel.
“While Tata Steel will miss Joe’s leadership and expertise, his legacy will continue through the next generation of industry professionals he has inspired. We extend our deepest gratitude to Joe for his years of service and wish him all the best in his retirement adventures,” adds Richard.
