Mark Drakeford has set out in his Programme for Government how the new Welsh Labour Government will deliver on the promises made to voters during the 2021 Senedd election and how it will tackle the big challenges we face.
Climate change and the environment is at the heart of the new government, with a new “super-Ministry”, bringing together the big policy areas to help Wales reach its legally binding target of reaching Net Zero by 2050.
For the first time, transport, planning, housing, and energy have been brought together, with the environment, to tackle the climate and nature emergencies, making sure climate change is firmly on the agenda for every public service and private sector business. The department will be run by Julie James MS and Llanelli MS Lee Waters.
The programme for Government also sets out plans to:
- Roll out child and adolescent mental health services in schools across Wales
- Pay care workers the real living wage
- Fund childcare for more families where parents are in education and training
- Create 125,000 apprenticeships and give everyone under 25 the offer of work, education, or training
- Legislate to abolish the use of more commonly littered, single-use plastics
- Make public transport more accessible to disabled people
Commenting on the programme, Lee Waters MS said:
“We are determined that no one will be left behind and no one will be held back as we come out of this pandemic. Our programme for government will focus on the areas where we can make the greatest difference to people and communities. Because for too many people in the Llanelli constituency, the old normal simply wasn’t working.
Addressing the Senedd, Mark Drakeford MS said:
“We are striving for a more prosperous, equal, and greener Wales. Our programme sets out to prioritise kindness and collaboration over division and competition. I hope that everyone who shares our values, who care for the future of our country and who is prepared to help us achieve the ambition we have for our people and our country will support us on this journey out of the pandemic.”
