Based at the town’s Prince Philip Hospital, the long-standing community and hospital station won three national awards at the 2025 Hospital Broadcasting Association (HBA) Awards.

At a ceremony held in Leicestershire, the station was awarded bronze in the Station of the Year category. Radio BGM also won gold in the best specialist music programme category, thanks to a documentary-style show inspired by Rado Caroline.

Further recognition included a gold award for Best Special Event, thanks to coverage of Radio BGM’s 50th anniversary.

Made up of a team of volunteers and formed in 1974, Radio BGM was a finalist in seven categories.

Two Radio BGM presenters – Steff Griffiths and Paul Scott – were placed inside the top 10 best presenters across the UK and top five best in Wales.

David Hurford said: “It’s incredible to receive one award, let alone three.

“This recognition is particularly special as we’ve just marked our 50th Anniversary — a year filled with celebrations and tireless work from our volunteers.

“Being recognised in the Station of the Year category really is the cherry on top.

“Here’s to another 50 years of serving our community and making great radio.”

2024 was a milestone year for the station. Alongside anniversary celebrations and community events, Radio BGM secured funding from Carmarthenshire Council through the UK Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF).

This has led to a complete refurbishment of Radio BGM’s main studio, which is now fitted with modern, industry-standard digital audio equipment to rival the facilities of national broadcasters.

The HBA Awards are a national celebration of excellence in hospital, health, and wellbeing broadcasting. Run by the Hospital Broadcasting Association, the awards recognise the vital role these stations play in supporting patients, staff and communities across the UK.

Radio BGM is actively seeking volunteers for a variety of roles — from presenting and production to events, fundraising and community engagement.
