A group of schoolchildren took part in a sponsored walk to fundraise for a chemotherapy day unit, a cause close to their hearts.

The young children, from Ysgol Llys Hywel in Whitland, were raising money for the Chemotherapy Day Unit at Prince Philip Hospital, Llanelli, to say thank you for the care their teacher received there.

The sponsored walk was one of two fundraising events Ysgol Llys Hywel held on behalf of Caroline Thomas, Assistant Headteacher at the school. She has been receiving treatment at the unit for the past two years. The other event – a coffee morning – was equally as successful, with both events raising a total of £2,600 for the unit.

Thanking the school community for their support, Headteacher Vanessa Roberts said they were very lucky to have such a supportive community where Caroline is well known to everyone.

And Caroline, too, was very grateful for the fundraising efforts.

She said: “I am so pleased with the amount raised by the children, parents and staff in their coffee morning and sponsored walk.”

Kath Watkins, Senior Sister, said: “On behalf of the staff and patients at the Chemotherapy Day Unit at Prince Philip Hospital, I would like to thank Ysgol Llys Hywel, for their fundraising efforts resulting a very generous donation of £2,600.

“We are always looking at ways to improve the environment and improve the way we care for patients within the Chemotherapy Day Unit.  Please be assured that this money will go towards this improvement. Thank you.”
