Llanelli Town Council has formally adopted the ‘Civility and Respect Pledge’, reaffirming its commitment to promoting respectful conduct, good governance, and positive democratic engagement within local government.
The proposal to adopt the pledge was brought forward following a recent meeting of the Larger Councils Committee of One Voice Wales, where it was noted that many councils across Wales are choosing to sign up to the initiative as part of their ongoing work to strengthen standards and professionalism in public service.
By adopting the pledge, Llanelli Town Council commits to helping create a culture where debate remains robust whilst always being conducted in a respectful and professional manner.
As part of the pledge, councils agree to:
- Promote civility and respectful conduct
- Support training and development for councillors and staff
- Uphold codes of conduct and principles of good governance
- Challenge bullying, harassment, and unacceptable behaviour
- Seek support and intervention at an early stage where issues arise
- Work towards a healthier democratic culture in local government
The overall aim of the Civility and Respect Pledge is to improve the way councils operate, better support staff and elected members, and help build greater public trust and confidence in local democracy.
Speaking on the adoption of the pledge, Independent Leader of Llanelli Town Council Sean Rees said:
“Llanelli Town Council is committed to ensuring that all council business is conducted in a respectful, professional and constructive manner. By formally adopting the Civility and Respect Pledge, we are demonstrating our commitment to supporting councillors and staff, maintaining high standards of conduct, and fostering a positive democratic culture for the benefit of our community.”
The Council believes the pledge represents an important step in continuing to strengthen openness, accountability, and mutual respect across all aspects of its work.
