More than 2100 children in Neath Port Talbot have been learning about how they can help to look after their local environment and encourage others to do the same.
Officers from the Council’s Waste and Neighbourhood Service visited eight local schools to deliver ‘On the Road with Tidy Ted and GreenBob SquareBox’, a road show aimed specifically at 5-11yr olds.
The aim was to teach the children about Environmental Waste such as dog fouling, graffiti, chewing gum, fly-tipping and litter and encourage them to get everyone in their families involved. It was delivered during a special assembly at each of the schools as for the whole school to enjoy.
Councillor Edward Latham, Cabinet Member for Streetscene and Engineering said:
“Improving waste management in the county borough is one of the Council’s priorities through our Reduce, Reuse, Recycle programme. Engaging children at an early age is key to delivering national aspirations in future.
“The Road Show was designed to achieve this through emphasising good environmental stewardship and inspiring the children to take action.”
The events aimed to make it easy for school children and communities to learn what and how to reduce, reuse, recycle and compost.
The campaign is funded by Welsh Government’s Tidy Town’s initiative and Neath Port Talbot Council with the aim of tackling local environmental issues that will help improve and protect our local environment.
Previous projects of this nature have enabled groups such as schools to make their area cleaner, safer and tidier places. Schools provide an important contribution to tackling issues such as littering and graffiti of local land
