The definition of a police state is ‘a country in which the government uses the police to severely limit the people’s freedom’. It would be a fair assertion to say that the United Kingdom has become a police state since the Covid-19 pandemic has begun.
The politicians are talking about allowing us to see family members over Christmas. No government or police force has the right to tell people they can’t see their family over Christmas. Especially, if they take steps to be careful. Nobody would put their family members in danger and if people were unwell and suspected they might have the virus then they would not go and visit their family.
During the first lockdown all non-essential shops, the hospitality and entertainment industry were closed to the public. Since we have come out of two lockdowns Covid-19 cases have been increasing. But pubs have been open and a number of Llanelli pubs have been closed for not sticking to the regulations in place. But people who are intoxicated are not likely to stick to the rules. It makes no sense to open the pubs as soon as we come out of lockdown and then tell people they can’t go and visit their family or friends.
The Covid rules don’t make sense and they are always changing. If they kept the pubs closed, I believe more people would take the rules more seriously.
Society, since the pandemic, has changed. We have seen police officers telling people that they are not allowed to stand in their front garden, people being fined for going to the shop to buy non-essential items and just general restrictions on our freedoms.
Hopefully, the vaccine will work and people can return to their normal lives as quickly as possible. Although, that may take a while because we are still in uncertain times. But never again should Britain return to being a police state where our freedoms are limited by the state.
