Residents are being urged to purchase a permit if they wish to fish in parts of the Millennium Coastal Park.
Fishing with a licence is permitted in Dyfatty and Morolwg ponds only and permits can be obtained from Llanelli’s North Dock Discovery Centre.
No fishing is allowed in Sandy Water Park Lake or Ashpits Pond Local Nature Reserve.
Improved signage will be displayed in these areas and rangers will increase their patrols after some locals expressed concerns of fishing in prohibited areas.
Carmarthenshire Council’s head of leisure, Ian Jones said: “We want people to enjoy fishing and two ponds have been provided for this purpose. Fishing is not permitted in other ponds and can cause serious damage or injury to protected marine wildlife and therefore may take action against anyone caught flouting the rules.”
Sandy Water Park is known for its abundance of sea and water birds including swans and wild flowers such as orchids. The lake was one of the cooling lakes associated with the former Duport Steel works, one of the largest and most advanced steel mills in the world.
