Llanelli’s Member of the Senedd, Lee Waters, has successfully completed a daring parachute jump to raise funds for supported living residents at a home in Llanelli.
He has now returned to their home, which is run by Mencap, to see the fruits of his fundraising efforts: a newly created garden space for the residents.
The garden had been mostly inaccessible to the people who live there, all of whom have a range of complex needs. The transformation means that they are now able to use the garden thanks to newly laid wheelchair-friendly paths.
The MS, who visited the home in Llangennech with local County Councillors Gary Jones and Jacqui Seward, expressed his delight at the transformation, stating:
“It is incredible to see how the funds raised have been put to such good use. The new garden space is a testament to the community’s generosity and the hard work of everyone involved. I am sure that it will enhance the quality of life for residents, providing them with a peaceful environment to enjoy. I look forward to going back to the garden once all the flowers have been planted.”
Wayne Crocker, Mencap Cymru’s Director, who also completed the parachute jump with Mr. Waters added:
“We were incredibly grateful to Lee Waters for finding the time to visit the garden in Llangennech, which Mencap Cymru was able to transform thanks to money raised from Lee’s brave parachute jump last year, a donation from local businessman George Parker, a grant from Screwfix and local fundraising by Mencap Cymru colleagues in Llanelli.”
“Far too many people with a learning disability live in houses, which are not fully accessible for them, and they don’t get to enjoy the outdoor spaces around their homes.”
“The work in Llangennech has totally transformed the garden, meaning wheelchair users who live at the house can finally enjoy their garden. We are now hoping to raise £5000 for phase 2 which will install a covered area to allow people Mencap Cymru support to access the garden all year round.
