Carmarthenshire Labour has today welcomed additional funding for local councils included in the Welsh Government budget, while making it clear that the money being passed to councils originates from the Labour Government in Westminster — not from Plaid Cymru.
All core funding for Welsh councils continues to come from the UK Labour Government, whose decisions to provide additional resources to Wales have enabled the Welsh Government to increase support for local services during a period of sustained pressure on councils.
While Plaid Cymru has indicated it will support the Welsh Labour budget in the Senedd, Carmarthenshire Labour is clear that this support does not equate to delivering the funding itself.
Cllr Deryk Cundy, Leader of the Labour Opposition on Carmarthenshire County Council, said:
“It is important to be absolutely clear with residents: the funding being made available to councils comes from the Labour Government in Westminster.
Plaid Cymru has chosen to back the Welsh Labour budget, but that is not the same as providing the money.”
“At local level, Carmarthenshire Labour will not engage in political point-scoring over funding. Our priority is ensuring that every pound passed to this council is spent effectively, transparently, and in the best interests of residents.”
Carmarthenshire Labour has confirmed it will closely scrutinise how additional funding is allocated and used by the Plaid-led County Council, particularly in areas under sustained pressure including social care, education, highways, and core community services.
“Supporting a budget is easy,” Cllr Cundy added.
“The real test is delivery. Carmarthenshire Labour will continue to hold the administration to account to make sure Labour-provided funding genuinely reaches the frontline services our communities rely on.”
Carmarthenshire Labour says residents deserve honesty about where funding comes from — and rigorous scrutiny over how it is spent.
