THE OWNER of a Llanelli opticians has completed a 13-mile sponsored walk from Cardiff to Barry and raised £350 to help improve prostate cancer care across Wales.

Matthew Harvey, director at Specsavers Llanelli, took part in the Prostate Cymru’s Walk of Wales, completing a 13-mile stretch from Cardiff’s Millennium Centre to Barry Island as part of the charity’s 44-day fundraising challenge.

The initiative will see nine core walkers cover 1,012 miles along the Welsh coastline by Sunday 9 August, raising funds to support six specialist prostate cancer nurses and encouraging more open conversations around prostate cancer.

Specsavers is jointly sponsoring the challenge, with 45 locally owned Specsavers businesses across Wales contributing £10,000 to help the charity reach its £300,000 fundraising target.

Specsavers Llanelli raised an additional £350 through its involvement in the walk and an in-store raffle, which is still ongoing.

Mr Harvey, director at Specsavers Llanelli, says: ‘Prostate cancer affects many families across Wales, including people in our local community, so when we heard about the Walk of Wales, we wanted to do what we could to support it.

‘As a local business, we’re always looking for ways to give back to our community. By taking part in the walk, we hope to help raise vital funds for prostate cancer care and encourage more people to have conversations that could ultimately save lives.’

Prostate Cymru’s chairman and one of the nine core walkers, Andy Thomas, adds ‘We are deeply grateful to Specsavers for their fantastic support and sponsorship. Having a champion like Specsavers in our corner gives the entire team an extra boost as we hit the road to make a meaningful difference for men’s health in Wales.’
