LLANELLI — Over 50 runners and walkers took to the streets this week as Sospan Road Runners hosted a powerful community event for Welsh Athletics’ national “Own The Night” campaign.
Coinciding with the autumn clocks going back, the initiative challenges the decline in winter running among women due to safety anxieties after dark. Gathering at Canolfan Pentre Awel, the vibrant sea of neon and headtorches sent a striking visual message of solidarity and empowerment.

Local PCSOs from Dyfed-Powys Police supported the campaign directly by walking alongside the groups.
Club Chairperson Angharad Davies expressed immense pride in the community response: “Seeing over 50 people turn out was moving. This campaign isn’t about hiding away during winter; it’s about empowering women to continue doing what they love with confidence. Together, we are actively reclaiming our streets.”

The inclusive social group completed a route around the local lake, igniting critical conversations about public safety and allyship.
Club Vice Chairperson Viv Jones highlighted the collaborative effort: “Having the police stand side-by-side with our groups sends a powerful message of reassurance. It’s all about education and support so our streets belong to everyone, no matter the time of day.”
The initiative brought together club veterans, local gym members, and complete newcomers in a shared safe space.
Reflecting on the event’s lasting impact, Club Treasurer Debbie Garner emphasised their ongoing inclusive mission: “Sospan Road Runners has always been about supporting each other. Whether you are a marathon runner or looking for a safe space to walk, nobody should compromise their health or peace of mind just because days are getting shorter.”
Sospan Road Runners host inclusive sessions for all abilities.
