Oktoberfest is the world’s largest Volksfest, featuring a beer festival and a travelling carnival, and is held annually in Munich, Bavaria, from mid or late September to the first Sunday in October, with more than six million international and national visitors attending the event. This year it will be held from Saturday 20th September to Sunday 5th October.
An event now becoming more common in the UK with many pubs stocking German Beers and breweries producing their take on German styled beers.
One such brewery is Antur Brewery in Brecon, so if you can’t make it to Oktoberfest then Oktoberfest can come to you.
They have produced a number of German styled offerings including their Schwazbier dark lager, Helles Bock, Coffee Dunkel, Helles lager and Altbier. We’ve decided to look at their Altbier, a style uncommon to many British beer drinkers. Not many beer styles can be traced back thousands of years, but Altbier is one of them. Altbier is a Germanic brew which literally translates to ‘Old beer’. A rare style that practically died out before the American craft beer industry brought it back to life. Antur’s New Altbier is a deep amber/red colour with crisp and moreish malt character and is a modern twist on the German classic. Their ‘all British’ version features only the best of UK grains and hops, showcasing a complex depth of sweeter malty notes and finished with a crisp medium hop bitterness at a modest 4.7% abv.
Once Oktoberfest and Halloween are out of the way we turn our eyes towards Christmas.
