Jonathan Scott Hopkins, aged 27 of Penlan, entered a property in Creswell Road, Clase on 29th June.
The victim was woken at around 3am when he heard noises and was confronted by Hopkins who made off from the scene but was arrested by police nearby.
Hopkins refused to answer any questions about the incident to police but later pleaded guilty when he appeared at Swansea Crown Court.
He was sentenced to nine years for the burglary and six months for a theft offence.
Detective Inspector Trudi Meyrick said:
“Hopkins used a high level of violence to smash his way into the home of his victim who confronted him in his own living room.
“Thanks to the support of witnesses at the scene Hopkins was quickly identified, arrested and charged with the offence.
“When serious offences such as this happen we do everything possible to catch those responsible and put them before the courts.”
