TEN people have been fined for illegally dumping waste at recycling banks, mostly in the Llanelli area.
Carmarthenshire County Council enforcement officers are dealing with increasing reports of rubbish being fly-tipped at the sites, which are made available to help people recycle household waste.
Ten people have been given £75 fixed penalty notices for a variety of offences at Dafen Pond car park, Morrisons car park and Llwynhendy Library car park in Llanelli, and two at Abergwili in Carmarthen.
If they don’t pay they could be prosecuted in court where the maximum fine is £2,500.
Officers have stepped up patrols and are using CCTV at problem areas to catch offenders in the act.
Cllr Philip Hughes, Executive Board Member responsible for public protection and enforcement, said: “Our recycling banks are a convenient way for people to recycle household waste in their communities, but unfortunately a number of people are abusing these facilities and fly-tipping all sorts of rubbish.
“People are also ignoring the signs that warn not to leave any rubbish on the ground. This is not only a blight on the environment, but is disrespectful to the local community – many of whom volunteer to keep their areas tidy.
“We hope these fines show how serious we are about protecting our environment. The message is simple – drop litter, pick up a fine.”
