On Saturday August 5th, eminating from Detroit’s Ford Field Stadium. WWE put on their latest PLE being one of the “Big 4”, The Greatest Party of the Summer, SummerSlam. Which weirdly was the first PLE since Wrestlemania to take place in America after WWE’s recent trips to Puerto Rico, London and Saudi Arabia. And while there were less shocking returns compared to MITB, there was still plenty to talk about following the show.
The show kicked off with Logan Paul continuing to show that, whatever you think of him personally you cannot deny his natural talent within the WWE. He proved this by defeating Ricochet in a match which did its job perfectly and started the night with a high paced, spotlight affair to get the crowd exicted and ready for the night ahead (also helping enable Logan to leave early so he could go watch his brother Jake box Nate Diaz over in Texas.)
Also on the show, we saw Shayna Bazler defeat Rhonda Rousey in an MMA-Rules match which many believe may be Rhonda’s last match in WWE. Dissension within the Judgement Day continue to highten as Damien Priest yet again accidentally cost Finn Balor his match against Seth Rollins, a match which this time seemed alot more personal as it was at SummerSlam 7 years ago that Finn defeated Seth to become the inaugaral Universal Champion before having to vacate the belt due to an injury caused by Seth. We also saw Cody Rhodes defeat Brock Lesnar once and for all while earning the Beast’s respect as they shook hands and embraced after the match. Proving yet again that Cody has a really good case to make for being the most likely person to topple Roman Reigns to eventually finish the story.
I say this, as Jey Uso despite his best efforts failed to be the one to defeat his cousin in ‘Tribal Combat’. Which ultimately was due to a returning Jimmy Uso shockingly turning on Jey and costing him the match. Which he then later justified on the following Smackdown as having done it because he worried that Jey defeating Roman would lead to the split of the Usos and Jey becoming just like Roman. Questionable logic of costing his brother one of the biggest moments of his career to avoid losing him aside, this approach naturally did not convince Jey who after laying out Jimmy, and the rest of the Bloodline, seemingly quit WWE altogether and left through the crowd.
Overall, while Roman may still be on top of the company he’s quickly losing everything he had. He’s lost Jey, Jimmy clarified his decision to cost Jey Tribal Combat had nothing to do with Roman, and with brief signs that Solo may be doubting Roman’s legitimacy as Head of the Table, you have to wonder just how long can he continue to cling on to the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship before eventually he has nothing left.
