At the time of writing, earlier this week (Tuesday, January 20th) Netflix dropped season 2 of their docu-series WWE Unreal. For any who don’t know/need a reminder, WWE Unreal is a show that takes the viewers behind the scenes of WWE and documents the stories/real lives of the people involved in creating/wrestling at WWE shows and all the deeper stories/drama that comes from that which usually never make it to our screens. While also shining a light on the background of events.
Season 1 released in July of 2025 and focused on the period of time starting at WWE’s Netflix debut on January 6th 2025 and going through to Wrestlemania 41. With more specific focuses on things such as the Royal Rumble and the decison to have Jey Uso win, Chelsea Green’s commemoration as the first ever Women’s United States Champion, Charlotte Flair’s return from injury and of course the story behind John Cena’s unforgettable heel turn at Elimination Chamber. Season 2 focuses on the timeline from Wrestlemania 41 all the way to last years Summerslam (which for the first time was a 2 night event similar to how Wrestlemania has been for years).
A lot of ground is covered in the 5 episodes surrounding several people/storylines. The biggest example is probably surrounding the ‘Ruse of the Century’ where Seth Rollins feigned a serious injury and fooled many into thinking he’d be out of action for months, only to shock the world when he cashed in on CM Punk at SummerSlam to rob him of the World Heavyweight Championship just minutes after Punk had won it from Gunther. We get some insight into just how closely kept a secret the affair really was, with only a few in the company trusted with the secret, seeing that Seth’s wife Becky by the end of the whole thing was tired of having to lie to people about her husband’s condition and that the whole thing was planned from the beginning and it was not a case of Seth got an injury that was far less severe than first thought as some believed at the time (including me).
Another big topic covered is the “release” of long time WWE veteran & beloved figure R-Truth. We learned that, technically Truth was out of contract with WWE, rather what happened was there was a wide gap in value during discussions & the decision had somewhat been made to let the contract expire. However then of course, the rapid & loud support for Truth both online and during shows led to people going back to the table & figuring things out to allow Truth’s return at Money in the Bank (in fact that same day was when a new contract was signed). These are only 2 of the biggest topics addressed in the season though, attention is also given to things such as the return of Becky Lynch at Wrestlemania and following feud with Lyra Valkyria (and their match at Summerslam which both women felt was a bit of a disaster), the rapid rise in popularity of Penta, the resurgence of Naomi with her updated Heel persona & eventual Women’s World Championship win at the end of Evolution and more.
We also right at the end of the show got confirmation of a Season 3 coming next Summer. With the core focus being on the John Cena Farewell Tour. As the show ends somewhat on a cliffhanger addressing the Summerslam match where Cena lost the WWE Championship to Cody Rhodes, and the subsequent return of Brock Lesnar to close the show. This feels like the most natural continuation of what the key focus of Season 3 should be, given just how important John Cena was to WWE and Professional Wrestling as a whole so it will no doubt be insightful to see the logic/decision making that went into the Farewell Tour for one of, if not the undisputed greatest of all time.
