Plaid ready to lead government and replace Labour – Rhun ap Iorwerth

Plaid Cymru is ready to “replace” Labour, promising “a new government, with new energy and new ideas”, party leader Rhun ap Iorwerth MS will tell conference delegates in Swansea today.

Addressing members and supporters at the Plaid Cymru Annual Conference with the party leading the polls ahead of the Senedd Election next May, Rhun ap Iorwerth will encourage people in Wales to “come with us”, claiming that “Together, we can choose a different path – one where we roll up our sleeves to fulfil our potential, not one where we simply settle for what we have.”

In a speech which contains further detail about Plaid’s ambitious Programme for Government and speaking from the main stage on Friday afternoon, Rhun ap Iorwerth MS is expected to say:

“Today, with a historic nation-building opportunity before us, I’m going to set out the choice facing Wales – two very different futures but only one credible option. 

“A seismic shift in our politics lies ahead. Change now seems inevitable and of course it’s long overdue. 

“So, to the people of Wales I say ‘come with us’

“Together, we can choose a different path – one where we roll up our sleeves to fulfil our potential, not one where we simply settle for what we have.

Rhun ap Iorwerth will set out how Plaid Cymru is ready to lead Wales and replace Labour as the party of government: 

“Let’s be clear. We’re not here to act as Labour’s conscience. We are not here to repair Labour. We are here to replace them. 

“We promise a new government, with new energy and new ideas to prove what every person who believes in Wales already knows – that things don’t have to be this way.

“Plaid Cymru believes deeply in our potential as a nation.  We say ‘Yes, Wales Can’ – and we want to show you how.

The Plaid Leader will also appeal to those who have never voted for his party before to do so next May in order to “forge new alliances for a brighter future” and to “give our nation the leadership it needs and the respect it deserves:

“So, if you’ve never voted for Plaid Cymru before, the time is now.

“The time is now to stop Reform and elect a government more radical, more ambitious, more impatient to bring about positive change than any which has gone before it. A government of progress and of progressive values.

“A government on the side of families, teachers, nurses, farmers, business-owners.

“Young and old. Urban and rural. North and south. Welsh speaker. Non-Welsh speaker.

“Life-long supporter and first-time voter. The time is now to forge new allegiances for a brighter future. 

“With your support, we can give our nation the leadership it needs and the respect it deserves.”

Wether you’re a Welsh speaker or not, think of your culture, if this donkey gets anywhere power, he’ll wipe it out. This is the imbecile who want’s Wales to be a country of Sanctuary, it is already in the process of being overwhelmed, it’s small nation that has struggled to maintain it’s identity. In the very near future, are grand children will be in the minority, the other cultures will be dominant and so dictate what is culture to be promoted and that will not be Welsh.

  36. Although the idea of Wales being run successfully by a Welsh party is nice, with Plaid, unfortunately, it is a fantasy, and they aren’t the ones to do it. They are too far left, dont have the right policies, and want free movement of people put back in place. They have abandoned the idea of independence (rightly in my view) so they are basically a Welsh version of Labour at this point, with less teeth. I think Plaid running Wales would be to the detriment of everyone in Wales.

It’s ironic, wanting independence from the UK, but wanting to be managed by unelected burocrats in the EU… and areas of Wales have been in poverty LONG before brexit. But hey ho, let’s open our doors to MORE people with our ‘nation of sanctuary’ nonsense!! I’d rather reform than more Labour destroying this beautiful country or plaid who are Labour wannabes. If there was a Welsh party who I thought would actually be any good, if vote for them.

      • ‘The Welsh “nation of sanctuary” plan is a Welsh government initiative to support refugees and asylum seekers. The plan involves providing support for housing, health care and employment and other integration services.’ So it is a Welsh government initiative. And far from pushing back against immigration Plaid want to welcome more with free movement (which the Welsh government also can’t decide. It’s the thought, policies and the direction they want to take us that is the problem. So my cornflakes are still nice and crispy thanks.

  45. So they should. The party that for the last hundred years or so has been wanting Wales to take back control and govern itself is obviously the party best suited for Welsh government. Not these Brit-nats who are more loyal to London than to Wales and certainly not these corporate spivs who want to cut and privatise everything for their billionaire pay-masters; problems caused by Thatcherism won’t be solved by more Thatcherism.

    Plaid Cymru have had years to prove themselves in Wales — and especially here in Carmarthenshire — and what have they actually delivered? Broken promises, half-done projects, and excuses. They talk about putting Wales first, but all they’ve done is put communities last.

    💸 Economy & Jobs
    Plaid claim to care about rural Wales, yet Carmarthenshire still suffers from poor investment, lack of jobs, and young people leaving because there’s nothing here for them. Businesses close while Plaid politicians talk about “independence” instead of real growth.

    🚗 20mph Speed Limit Chaos
    They backed Labour’s ridiculous 20mph speed limit that’s caused chaos across Wales. It’s slowed everything down, hurt small businesses, wasted public money, and made life harder for working people — all for a policy that nobody asked for.

    🏫 Failing Local Services
    Schools overcrowded, bins missed, roads falling apart — and Plaid’s answer? Blame Westminster. They run councils, they’ve had influence in the Senedd, but services are worse than ever.

    🏠 Out of Touch on Real Issues
    While families struggle with bills, Plaid spends its time chasing independence and symbolic gestures instead of tackling the cost of living, the NHS backlog, or transport problems. They’re focused on politics, not people.

    🗣️ Dividing Communities
    Plaid say they stand for “One Wales,” but they’ve created a divide between Welsh speakers and non-speakers. Everyone should be proud of our language, but forcing everything through policy instead of choice just drives people apart.

    🤝 Too Close to Labour
    Plaid pretend to be an alternative, yet they’ve spent the last few years propping up Labour in Cardiff. If you vote Plaid, you’re basically voting for Labour again — more of the same failures, higher taxes, and weaker public services.

    Plaid Cymru have had the chance to make things better — they haven’t.
    If you want real change, stronger local leadership, and a party that actually listens to working people, don’t vote Plaid Cymru.
