Welsh Government has announced an additional £40 million for universities to support students facing financial hardship, helping those most affected by the pandemic with expenses such as accommodation costs.
Universities will be asked to prioritise funding towards the most vulnerable students, as well as strengthening support and advice services.
With most students currently being asked to study at home, the funding will also be used to address digital exclusion among students, enabling better access to online learning.
Kirsty Williams, the Education Minister said: “Many thousands of students have not been able to return to campus yet. We recognise how difficult it is for students still paying for accommodation which they are unable to use.”
Llanelli’s Member of the Senedd, Lee Waters, said: “Many students and parents have been in touch worried about the financial impact of this current lockdown. I’m pleased this funding has been made available to ensure the most vulnerable and most affected students can complete their studies.”
