Princess Gwenllian Centre embraces green energy with support from Welsh Government

Llanelli’s Member of the Senedd, Lee Waters MS, has visited the Princess Gwenllian Centre in Kidwelly which has taken a major step towards a greener, more sustainable future, thanks to funding from the Welsh Government’s Ynni Cymru scheme.

The Centre – a vital community hub supporting sport, health and wellbeing in Kidwelly and Mynydd-y-Garreg – has recently installed a cutting-edge renewable energy system. This includes a large solar panel array and high-capacity battery storage, enabling the building to meet 80% of its electricity needs through clean, locally generated power.

Lee Waters MS said:

“I recently visited the Princess Gwenllian Centre and saw first-hand the impact of the Ynni Cymru funding. This green technology isn’t just reducing carbon emissions – it’s making a real difference to the community by cutting energy costs and supporting long-term sustainability. It’s a great example of how the Welsh Government is delivering practical, local solutions to the climate crisis.”

The project forms part of a wider £10 million investment by the Welsh Government to roll out smart local energy systems (SLES) across Wales. Thirty-two projects have been funded to date, with technologies such as solar panels, heat pumps, battery storage, and EV charging points being deployed in community spaces including leisure centres, sports clubs, and places of worship.

Rob Davies, Treasurer at the Princess Gwenllian Centre, said:

“We’re thrilled with the system’s performance. Not only are we cutting energy costs, but we’re also contributing to Wales’ wider sustainability goals. This project shows how local action can make a real difference.”

Ynni Cymru is an initiative placing the power of clean energy directly in the hands of Welsh communities. It reflects the commitment to building a fairer, greener Wales and delivering long-term change through smart investment in local energy.
