Carmarthenshire County Council proudly commemorates the late Welsh rugby legend, Phil Bennett, with the unveiling of a new commemorative plaque on the pedestrian and cycling bridge in Llanelli. This plaque not only honours Bennett’s remarkable sporting achievements but also recognises his profound contributions to the community he called home.
Phil Bennett, hailing from Felinfoel, left an indelible mark on the rugby field, captivating audiences with his skill and passion for the game. Beyond his sporting prowess, Bennett was a beloved figure in the community, known for his generosity and commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others.
Funded via the Welsh Government Active Travel Fund with support from Transport for Wales, this bridge symbolises more than just a convenient passage—it represents a step forward in creating a broader network of routes linking communities and enhancing accessibility. By offering direct access to the retail hub at Parc Trostre, the bridge further enriches the area’s connectivity and convenience, benefiting residents and visitors alike.
The unveiling of the Phil Bennett Memorial Stone on this bridge marks the third memorial dedicated to him in Llanelli, underscoring the lasting impact of his sporting legacy and his profound contributions to the community.

It’s a bridge to nowhere at the moment though….until another bridge is built over the railway line and the cycle/walk path links up with the coastal path…

Steven Williams not on the cycle path….the Black bridge is in the original plans to be changed…at the moment the cycle path goes down penyfan quarry to the railway line…and then nowhere…

Steven Williams yes mate, just for pleasure…and yes I can carry the bike…but that’s not what I stated….the plans brought out before the bridge and a few hundred yards of path were built showed a bridge replacement for the Black bridge and cycle path continuing along the old railway line past the Whitstable and then joining the coastal path…
Josh Williams well we have to just be happy with what we got surly, the council are doing there best to make Carmarthenshire a cycling county, we have greater infrastructure than most. With not a great deal using them.
