Local politicians Lee Waters MS, Nia Griffith MP and County Councillor John Prosser were among those helping to keep Llanelli beach clean and safe for all in a big beach clean-up organised by the Marine Conservation Society.
Last weekend, they joined a number of local volunteers who removed several bags of rubbish, including plastic and metal litter – which can cause serious damage to people and animals – from the beach.
Llanelli’s Senedd Member, Lee Waters, said:
“I want to thank all the volunteers for their contribution. We removed several bags of rubbish and cleared a lot of plastic, which, sadly, many animals try to eat.”
“We have a beautiful coastline here in Llanelli. We should all be proud of it and want people to come to visit it. But keeping it clean is a big part of its attraction. A clean and healthy coastline is vital to maintaining the biodiversity we have in our local community. So, everyone can enjoy the outdoor beauty”.
Beach Cleans are becoming a regular occurrence across Wales. They help to maintain the biodiversity of our beaches. While also keeping them safe spaces for people to enjoy.
Llanelli’s member of Parliament Nia Griffiths added:
“As well as carrying out a litter pick, I was very interested that members of the Marine Conservation Society brought surveys for us to complete, recording the sort of litter we found, and that they can then use this information to highlight, for example, particular single use plastic items, which we should look to replace with more environmentally friendly materials, so we were doing something immediately practical but also contributing to the bigger change we need. ”
County Councillor John Prosser said:
“It was an honour to join so many volunteers and the Marine group and I am interested to read the results of the surveys. I think it is important that we are made aware of what is being left on our beaches”.
