Due to a high volume of constituents’ complaints, the Member of the Senedd for Llanelli, Lee Waters, is urging people to continue to follow the Welsh Government’s rules and guidance on Covid-19.
Recently the Llanelli MS contacted Carmarthenshire County Council about the number of complaints he received about people not wearing masks where required. Acting on information provided by Mr. Waters, the council carried out a number of inspections to make sure that Covid-19 guidelines are still being followed.
The Welsh Government require masks to be worn in a number of settings. These include spaces like supermarkets, public transport, churches and hospitality premises.
Such premises are being reminded that they need to take the necessary measures to ensure the safety of their staff and guests.
Lee Waters MS commented:
“Case rates are continuing to rise, and are higher in Wales than in the rest of the UK. Currently around 20% of tests are coming back positive and case rates are 650 per 100,000 across Wales. So we are amongst the highest in the world”
“The vaccination programme is making a difference and the number of people in hospital with Covid is around 70% lower than the earlier waves. But we’re seeing younger people ending up in hospital, most of whom are unvaccinated. We’re also seeing some ‘waning immunity’ where the vaccine is wearing off in those who had it first. And because of all the other things hospitals are having to deal with they are really struggling, and Covid calls are also putting a strain on the ambulance service. So, we need to keep the level of Covid in the community as low as possible. The higher we let rates rise, the greater the risk of a new variant of Covid developing that can get around the vaccine”
“If rates continue to rise we are going to have to consider going back into Alert Level 1. We’re not there yet, and it’s up to each of us what happens next.”
