More than just words Showcase Event 2017
Carmarthenshire County Council was shortlisted at the ‘More than just words’ showcase event for its Welsh language service provided by Dewis Sir Gâr.
The service is provided to vulnerable users in Welsh without their having to ask for it.
The national awards recognize the importance of providing Welsh language services in health, social services and social care and the exceptional work carried out by individuals and teams.
A special commendation was given to Care Line and Dewis Sir Gâr for providing the language active offer. Dewis Sir Gâr is the single point of access for information, advice and assistance on all matters relating to social care across the county.
Carmarthenshire County Council is the only alarm monitoring centre which works side by side with professional health practitioners from organisations including Hywel Dda University Health Board 24 hours a day, seven days a week, while providing a language choice by qualified staff. The service also supports a further six local authorities in Wales.
The staff concentrate on the active offer which allows any service users who phone Care Line to receive information and discuss their personal information in the language of their choice without having to request it.
Since Carmarthenshire’s population has a high percentage of Welsh speakers, the service has ensured that between 65 per cent and 85 per cent of the staff on any shift can speak Welsh.

Council executive board member for social care and health Cllr Jane Tremlett said: “I’m delighted that Carmarthenshire County Council’s Care Line and Dewis Sir Gâr have been commended for their pioneering work in enabling users of their services to be given help and advice through the medium of Welsh without having to ask.”
