Carmarthenshire County Council has pledged a further £48,000 for foodbanks in Carmarthenshire.
This is in addition to £112,000 of food already distributed by the council to help residents who have been experiencing financial difficulty and struggling to feed their families as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.
The council has teamed up with Cross Hands-based food supplier Castell Howell to provide the food which is allocated on a need and demand basis.
Egni Sir Gâr Cyfyngedig donated £42,000 from income generated from council buildings solar panels, with other donations from the housing department and the WG hardship fund. Some £5,000 was also donated by trading standards from cash generated under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
Executive Board Member for resources, Cllr David Jenkins said: “We must continue to support families who are experiencing financial difficulty and struggling to put food on the table as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Through no fault of their own they are unable to afford the basic essentials in life and these further funds will go towards helping them as they recover and make their way out of the pandemic.”
